Discover Washington by car

Known as the Evergreen State for its agriculture and fruit production, as well as its rugged wilderness and dense forests, Washington is a memorable and rewarding state to visit all year round. Your own car is essential for getting around the Pacific North-West, so look no further than Alamo. They have a huge selection of modern, reliable cars at your disposal, whether you are flying into Seattle-Tacoma (SEA-TAC) International Airport in the west of the state, or Spokane International Airport in the east.

Experience Seattle

If you are arriving at SEA-TAC, your first stop should be the city of Seattle, situated on the Isthmus, midway between the Pacific inlet known as the Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with its famous floating bridges. After taking in the spectacular view from the Space Needle, head directly to Seattle Downtown, for shopping, restaurants and nightlife, including the famous Pike Place Market, the oldest farmer's market in the US. This sprawling market on the Elliot Bay waterfront includes restaurants, booksellers, antique and collector's shops as well as the expected array of fresh produce, seafood and unique local craft stalls.

Breath-taking scenery of Washington's countryside

With Alamo's convenient service, it couldn't be easier to head north out of Seattle towards the pleasant city of Bellingham, where attractions include Whatcom Falls Park and whale watching off the Georgia Strait, as well as popular cruises to the San Juan Islands. Departing from Bellingham on Highway 542, Mount Baker Highway runs through the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, taking in 60 miles of breath-taking mountain scenery, including Heather Meadows and all the way up to Artist Point. Then head east along the North Cascades Scenic Highway, following Highway 20 towards the North Cascades National Park, with its mountains, lakes and forests, and the western-themed town of Winthrop. South of Seattle, the Olympic National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, containing several different ecosystems including the country's only temperate rainforests. The popular Hurricane Ridge, with its winter sports centre and spectacular views, is only a few hours' drive out of Seattle, and the state capital of Olympia is also well worth a visit.

With attractions ranging from volcanic mountains to lush vineyards, lumber mills to the Grand Coulee Dam, Washington is a state that begs to be explored at length and at leisure, taking in the stunning sights that appear around every bend in the road.
